Slug Generator: SEO-Friendly URLs From Any Title
A slug generator turns a page title into the readable part of a URL: lowercase, words joined by hyphens, accents and symbols removed. Paste one title or a list below; you can strip filler words, cap the length and copy each slug.

What makes a good URL slug?
Short, readable and hyphenated. Google recommends simple, descriptive URLs and specifically hyphens instead of underscores between words, because hyphens mark a word boundary while underscores join words together.
A good slug:
- uses lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens only;
- keeps the words that describe the page and drops filler;
- doesn't include dates or version numbers you'll have to change;
- stays the same once published.

How long should a slug be?
Around three to five words. We measured the last path segment of 497 URLs that rank in Google's top 10 for 61 technical SEO searches in October 2026: the median slug was 19 characters and 3 words long, and only 4.2% ran past 60 characters.
The same sample shows how settled the conventions are. 75.7% of slugs used hyphens, 4.6% used underscores and 5.6% of paths had uppercase letters — the rest were single words.
Should I remove stop words like "the" and "of"?
Usually, yes, when it doesn't change the meaning. "how-to-fix-a-redirect-chain" reads fine as "fix-redirect-chain". Keep a stop word when dropping it makes the slug ambiguous; in our sample, 18.1% of ranking slugs still contained at least one, so this is a readability choice, not a rule.
This generator only removes stop words when a title has more than three words, and always keeps the first word.

What if I change a slug after publishing?
Add a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one, and update internal links. Google treats a permanent redirect as a strong signal that the new URL should replace the old one (Google on redirects).
Changed slugs without redirects are one of the most common causes of 404s after a redesign. Test the old URLs afterwards with the redirect checker, and keep page titles aligned with the slug using the title tag checker.

FAQ
What is a URL slug?
+
The part of a URL that identifies a single page in readable words, usually after the last slash. In example.com/blog/fix-redirect-chain, the slug is "fix-redirect-chain".
Do keywords in the URL help SEO?
+
A little at most. A descriptive URL mainly helps people decide to click because it tells them what the page is before they visit. Readability matters far more than squeezing extra keywords in.
Should slugs be lowercase?
+
Yes. URL paths are case-sensitive, so Example and example can be treated as two different URLs. Lowercase-only slugs avoid accidental duplicates and broken links.
