Semrush Alternatives: An Honest Map of What to Buy Instead

The best Semrush alternative depends on the one job you're actually hiring it for - competitor research, rank tracking, technical audits, or, increasingly, whether AI engines like ChatGPT mention your brand at all. No single tool covers all four as well as Semrush covers the first three, which is exactly why "alternative" shoppers usually end up with two smaller tools instead of one big one.

This guide skips the affiliate rankings and gets specific about what each alternative is actually good at, what it costs to run, and who should skip it entirely.

Why look for a Semrush alternative?

Most people start shopping for a Semrush alternative for one of four honest reasons, and it helps to name yours before comparing tools, because the reason changes the answer.

  • Price at the premium tier. Semrush's higher plans are built for agencies running multiple client accounts, not a single in-house marketer. If you're paying agency pricing for a one-person job, that's the mismatch - not the tool.
  • Paying for breadth you don't use. Semrush bundles social media tools, PR outreach, ad research, content marketing, and more into one suite. Touch three of those features and pay for twelve, and you're funding a lot of unused seats.
  • Per-seat costs on a team plan. Adding teammates multiplies the bill fast. Teams that need three or four logins often find the per-seat math stops making sense well before the feature list stops being useful.
  • A job Semrush isn't built for. This is the least talked-about reason and the fastest-growing one. Semrush was built to track rankings in Google's ten blue links, and even its AI Toolkit add-on is still fundamentally a rank-and-mention tracker bolted onto the same suite. It has almost nothing to say about whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overviews actually recommend your brand in a live conversational answer. That's a different measurement problem, and it needs a different tool.

If your reason is the first or second, you want a cheaper all-in-one or a smaller point tool. If it's the fourth, you want something that isn't a traditional SEO suite at all - more on that in the last section.

The honest map of alternatives

Every "Semrush alternative" list on Google right now is either an affiliate roundup optimized for commission or a competitor's own comparison page. Here's the map without a commission attached to it.

Ahrefs - the peer swap. Ahrefs is the closest like-for-like trade: a similar price range, similar breadth, and a backlink index most SEOs consider the industry benchmark. People switch here when their real complaint isn't the price, it's link data quality. If Ahrefs is on your shortlist, our full comparison of Ahrefs alternatives is worth reading too - it covers this same trade from the other direction.

SE Ranking and its class - the value all-in-one. Tools in this tier cover the same core categories as Semrush - rank tracking, site audit, keyword research, competitor snapshots - at a meaningfully lower price, usually by trimming historical data depth and backlink index size. For solo marketers and small agencies who need "good enough" numbers rather than research-grade ones, that trade is often the right call. Our full SE Ranking review covers exactly where it holds up and where the data gets thin.

Mangools, Serpstat, and other budget point tools. These skip the all-in-one promise entirely and do two or three things - usually keyword research and rank tracking - at a genuinely low price. Fine if your workflow is narrow. Frustrating if you also need site audits or backlink data, because now you're stacking two subscriptions instead of one.

Screaming Frog - the technical crawler. Not a Semrush replacement so much as a different tool for a different job: crawling a site to surface broken links, duplicate titles, redirect chains, and crawl-budget waste. Its licensing sits closer to a one-time annual purchase than a recurring suite subscription, which technical SEOs doing periodic audits tend to like. It doesn't touch keyword research or competitor tracking at all.

Google's free stack - the genuinely free path. Search Console, Keyword Planner, and Trends cost nothing and come straight from the source everyone else is estimating from. The honest limit: none of them show a competitor's traffic, keywords, or backlinks. They tell you about your own site and general search demand - valuable, but a different job than competitive research.

AEOeye - the AI-visibility specialist. Worth an honest flag here: this isn't a Semrush alternative in the traditional sense, and we won't pretend otherwise. Semrush and everything above measure your position in classic Google search. None of them measure whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews, or Claude recommend your brand when someone asks a buying question in plain language. That's a separate, newer category - AI SEO tools - and it's the gap most "Semrush alternative" searches don't realize they have.

Alternative class Core strength Cost posture Free option? Pick it if...
Ahrefs Backlink index, research-grade data Premium, comparable to Semrush Limited free tools Link data quality is your real complaint
SE Ranking class All-in-one at a lower price Mid-tier, noticeably cheaper Free trial only You want the same categories, less depth
Mangools / Serpstat class Focused keyword + rank tools Budget Free trial or limited tier Your workflow is narrow, not full-suite
Screaming Frog Technical site crawling Near one-time annual license Capped free version You audit sites, not competitors
Google's free stack Your own site's real search data Free Fully free You just need rank and keyword basics
AEOeye AI answer-engine visibility Free audit, paid full report Yes - free audit Your question is AI recommendations, not rankings

The free Semrush alternative question

There is no free tool that replicates the full Semrush suite - that's the honest answer, and anyone claiming otherwise is describing a limited trial, not a real substitute. What you can build for free is a thinner version that covers the basics.

Search Console gives you real rank and click data for your own site, at the query level, straight from Google, for free. Keyword Planner gives you keyword ideas and volume ranges, also free, though volumes are bucketed rather than exact unless you're running active ad spend. Trends adds directional demand data on top.

Stack those three and you have your actual rankings, keyword ideas, and demand trends - a real chunk of what a solo blogger or small site owner needs day to day.

Here's what the free stack can't do:

  • No competitor keyword lists. You can't see what a rival ranks for that you don't.
  • No backlink data. You can't audit your own link profile or a competitor's, at all.
  • No automated site audit. No crawl for broken links, duplicate tags, or technical waste at scale.
  • No competitive gap analysis. Nothing that says "here's what your top competitors rank for that you're missing."

If your business genuinely doesn't need competitive intelligence yet - a lot of small, local, or early-stage sites don't - the free stack isn't a compromise, it's simply the right-sized tool. If you do need it, budget for at least one paid tool rather than keep hunting for a free way around that gap. It doesn't exist yet.

How to actually choose

Skip the feature-comparison spreadsheets for a minute and do this instead: write down the last ten things you actually did inside Semrush, or would do in a new tool, over the past month.

Not the fifty features on the pricing page - the ten real tasks. Checking a specific competitor's new pages, pulling volume for a keyword list, tracking twenty rankings, running a site crawl before a client call, whatever your actual Tuesday looks like.

Now sort that list:

  1. Tasks you do weekly. These need to be fast and reliable in whatever tool you pick - don't compromise here.
  2. Tasks you do monthly. These can tolerate a slower or clunkier tool, or even a manual workaround.
  3. Tasks you've never actually done, despite the feature existing in your current plan. Be honest about this one - it's usually longer than expected, and it's exactly the budget you're overpaying for.

Buy for lists one and two. Stop paying for list three. That single exercise, done honestly, points you at the right alternative faster than any comparison table - including the one above.

The job none of them do

Here's a question none of these tools - Semrush included - were built to answer: when someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overview for a recommendation in your category, does your brand actually get mentioned?

Rank trackers watch the ten blue links. They have no visibility into what an AI model says out loud in a conversational answer, and a growing share of buying research now happens in exactly that format: one direct answer, no scrolling, no visible ranking to track.

That's a different audit, not a bigger feature list bolted onto an old one. AEOeye runs a free check of how ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI, and Claude answer buying questions in your category, and whether your brand shows up at all. It won't replace your rank tracker or your backlink tool - it answers the one question none of them can. Check your AI visibility with a free AEOeye audit.

FAQ

What is the best Semrush alternative?+

It depends on the job. Ahrefs is the closest like-for-like swap, praised mainly for its backlink index. SE Ranking-class tools cover similar categories at a lower price. Screaming Frog handles technical crawls. None of them measure AI-answer visibility - that's a separate category AEOeye covers instead.

Is there a free Semrush alternative?+

Not a full replacement - no free tool matches Semrush's breadth. But Google Search Console, Keyword Planner, and Google Trends together cover the basics for free: your real rankings, keyword ideas, and demand trends. You lose competitor keyword data, backlink analysis, and automated site audits.

Is Ahrefs better than Semrush?+

Neither is strictly better - they overlap heavily but lead in different places. Ahrefs' backlink index has the stronger reputation among SEOs; Semrush leans broader, with more bundled marketing features beyond core SEO. Pick Ahrefs for link research depth, Semrush for the wider all-in-one suite.

What's the cheapest Semrush alternative?+

Google's free stack - Search Console, Keyword Planner, and Trends - costs nothing, but only covers your own site plus general keyword and demand data. Among paid tools, Mangools- and Serpstat-class point tools tend to sit well below Semrush's price, though they cover fewer categories overall.
