Free Favicon Generator From Text, Emoji or Image

Three ways to start: type one or two letters, paste an emoji, or upload a logo. Pick a background, shape and padding, and the previews update at real sizes — 16, 32, 48 and 180 pixels — so you can see whether it still reads at the size of a browser tab.

Simple shapes survive best. A detailed logo that works at 512 pixels often turns into a smudge at 16.

Favicon Generator Online: The Sizes Google Needs

Google needs very little: a square icon of at least 8×8 pixels, ideally larger than 48×48, declared on your homepage (Google's guidelines). The other files serve browsers and devices:

File Size Used by
favicon.ico 16, 32, 48 px Browser tabs, Google Search
apple-touch-icon.png 180 px iPhone and iPad home screens
icon-192.png, icon-512.png 192, 512 px Android and installable web apps
site.webmanifest — Lists the app icons (web.dev)

Why does my favicon look blurry or invisible?

Usually because a wide logo was squeezed into a square, or thin details vanished at 16 pixels. Use a bold mark or a single letter, leave a little padding, and check contrast against both light and dark browser tabs — a dark icon on a transparent background can disappear in dark mode.

How do I install the favicons?

Unzip the files into your site root and paste the snippet into the head of every page:

<link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico" sizes="48x48">
<link rel="icon" href="/icon-192.png" type="image/png" sizes="192x192">
<link rel="apple-touch-icon" href="/apple-touch-icon.png">
<link rel="manifest" href="/site.webmanifest">

Make sure robots.txt doesn't block the files: Google fetches favicons with Googlebot-Image.

Do big sites bother with all these files?

Most do. In our October 2026 analysis of 315 big-brand homepages (dataset), 90.8% declared an icon, 66.7% set an Apple touch icon and 21.3% offered an SVG favicon.

After uploading, run the favicon checker to confirm Google can load a qualifying icon, then check how your site looks when shared with the link preview tool.

FAQ

What size should a favicon be?

+

Provide favicon.ico with 16, 32 and 48 pixel versions, a 180 pixel Apple touch icon and 192 and 512 pixel PNGs. Google requires at least 8×8 and recommends larger than 48×48.

Can I use an emoji as a favicon?

+

Yes. Type an emoji in the text field and the generator draws it into every file. Emoji rendering follows your device's emoji font, so check the preview before downloading.

Should I use an SVG favicon?

+

An SVG icon scales perfectly and Google accepts it, but keep favicon.ico as well for older browsers and tools that only look for /favicon.ico.
