A search where the user gets their answer directly on the results page — from an AI Overview, snippet or knowledge panel — without clicking any link.
Zero-click search describes queries answered on the results page itself, so no website gets the visit. AI Overviews accelerated the trend: when Google synthesizes an answer at the top, many users never scroll to the blue links below.
Zero-click doesn't make visibility worthless — it shifts the prize from the click to the citation. Being the source named inside the AI answer still builds awareness and trust, even without the visit, which is exactly what answer engine optimization targets.
