Best AthenaHQ Alternatives (2026): Six Options by Need and Price
By the AEOeye editorial team·Updated Oct 3, 2026
Part of our pillar guide: AI Visibility Tools

The short answer
The best AthenaHQ alternative depends on the job. For a one-time check of whether AI engines name you, use AEOeye ($0 or $29 once). For cheaper daily tracking, look at Otterly.AI (from $29 a month), LLMrefs ($79) or Peec AI ($95). For SEO plus AI tracking, Nightwatch (€99). For enterprise scale, Profound is quote-only.
This guide is based on public documentation and each vendor's own pricing page as of October 2026; we have not tested any of these products hands-on. AEOeye is our product and is listed here too, so weigh that. Prices were read from the vendors' pages on 3 October 2026 and change often.
AthenaHQ is a capable platform, and the last section says when it is still the right pick. The goal here is narrower: if its credit model or its price floor does not fit, which tool should you look at instead?
Why look for an AthenaHQ alternative?
The reasons people leave are visible on AthenaHQ's own plans page as of October 2026. There are three, and none is a flaw: they are trade-offs you should price in before you commit.
- The bill is metered and partly unpublished. One credit equals one AI response. Starter includes 3,600 credits for $295 a month, but extra credits and API access are "paid add-ons" with no listed price. Your cost depends on prompts, models and how often you re-run them.
- Scale features sit behind a quote. Starter is labeled single language and region. The Enterprise card lists multi-region support, persona targeting, the Citation Engine, SAML SSO and BI dashboards, all on custom pricing.
- The Free plan is a sampler. It gives $25 of credit, described as 300 credits, across five platforms. That checks a handful of prompts once or twice; it does not track a trend.
If none of these bites, stay. If one does, the table below shows the realistic options.

Which alternatives fit which need?
Match the tool to the job, not to the feature list. Tracking tools differ mostly in how many prompts you get, how many engines are included, and how often they re-run. The table after this section gives entry prices; here is the fit.
- AEOeye: a one-time check. The free audit asks ChatGPT three unbranded buyer questions and shows the real answers and the competitors named instead. The $29 one-time report adds Claude, Gemini, Google AI and Perplexity and ten questions. No subscription, but no repeat checks either.
- Otterly.AI: the cheapest daily tracker. Lite is $29 a month for 15 prompts on ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot; Claude, AI Mode and Gemini are extra add-ons. Standard is $189 for 100 prompts.
- Peec AI: the balanced middle. Starter is $95 a month for 50 prompts on three models of your choice, with unlimited users and daily tracking. Pro is $245 for 150 prompts.
- LLMrefs: the most prompts per dollar. Its site lists one plan, All in One, at $79 a month (marked "limited time only") for 500 prompts, with weekly reports and a 7-day trial.
- Nightwatch: SEO and AI in one tool. Starter is €99 a month billed monthly (€79 on yearly billing) for 500 keywords and 50 AI prompts, with a 14-day trial and no card.
- Profound: enterprise only. Its brand plans are a free 7-day trial (50 prompts daily on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews) and a custom Enterprise plan tracking up to nine engines.
Our position: nobody needs enterprise tooling to learn whether they are invisible. Buy monitoring after a snapshot has told you which prompts to watch.
What does AthenaHQ cost per AI answer, compared with these tools?
AthenaHQ's implied rate is about $0.082 per response ($295 divided by 3,600 credits), and several alternatives are cheaper per answer. Compare carefully: engines, refresh rates and extras differ, so treat this as a rough yardstick, not a ranking.
Peec states the arithmetic on its pricing page: Starter's 50 prompts across 3 models, tracked daily, come to 4,500 monthly AI answers for $95, or about $0.021 each. By our arithmetic, Otterly Lite's 15 prompts on 4 engines, run daily, come to 1,800 answers for $29 (about $0.016), assuming every prompt runs on every included engine. Nightwatch lists 1,500 AI answers a month on Starter, so €99 works out to about €0.066, but that price also buys 500 tracked keywords.
More answers per dollar is not automatically better. SparkToro and Gumshoe found that ChatGPT and Google's AI rarely return the same brand list twice, so one run per prompt tells you little; they suggested 60 to 100 runs per prompt. Ask any vendor how many responses it collects per prompt per cycle, and whether the number shown is an average.

What did we see on these vendors' own sites?
In AEOeye's crawler access study (October 2026; one fetch per site, per our method notes), none of the 43 AI-visibility vendor sites blocked an AI bot in robots.txt. This is a fact box, not a quality verdict.
- llms.txt: 27 of the 41 vendors we could check publish one (65.9%). athenahq.ai and llmrefs.com do; peec.ai, tryprofound.com and nightwatch.io returned 404. otterly.ai refused our crawler with a 403, so we could not tell.
- Structured data: peec.ai and tryprofound.com showed no JSON-LD in the served homepage HTML, which can mean it is injected by JavaScript. FAQPage markup appeared on 18 of 42 vendor homepages, against 7.4% of SaaS sites overall.
The practical lesson: the people selling AEO do the visible structure work first. Check your own robots.txt and crawler access before you pay anyone for monitoring; our AI crawler directory shows how.
When is AthenaHQ still the right choice?
AthenaHQ is still the right choice when you need breadth and workflow more than a low entry price. Starter lists 11 models and, per its plans page, connects AI visibility to GA4, Search Console, Shopify and Webflow.
- You track dozens of prompts weekly across many models, and someone owns the results.
- You want GA4, Search Console, Shopify or Webflow connected, per AthenaHQ's plans page.
- You want recommendations and a content workflow beside the data, not a separate tool.
- You are an agency or enterprise that needs seats, SSO or multi-region, and a quote is acceptable.

FAQ
What is the cheapest AthenaHQ alternative?+
For a one-time check, AEOeye is free: three buyer questions asked to ChatGPT, with the real answers shown. For ongoing tracking, Otterly.AI's Lite plan is $29 a month for 15 prompts, as of October 2026. AthenaHQ itself also has a Free plan with 300 credits, so compare that before paying for anything.
Is there a free alternative to AthenaHQ?+
Yes, several offer a free route. AEOeye's audit is free but ChatGPT-only. AthenaHQ has its own Free plan, Profound offers a 7-day trial, LLMrefs a 7-day trial and free account, and Nightwatch a 14-day trial with no card. None of the free routes replaces months of tracking.
Which AthenaHQ alternative covers the most AI engines?+
AthenaHQ Starter lists 11 models, the widest of the options here. Profound's Enterprise plan tracks up to nine engines. LLMrefs lists all major engines in its single plan, and Nightwatch lists six platforms. AEOeye's $29 report covers five: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Google AI and Perplexity.
Does AEOeye replace AthenaHQ?+
No. AEOeye is a one-time audit, not a daily tracker, and it does not write content. It answers whether AI engines name you today and who they name instead. If you need ongoing monitoring across many prompts, a dedicated tracker such as AthenaHQ, Peec AI or Otterly.AI is the better fit.
How should I compare AI visibility tool prices?+
Compare the number of prompts, the engines included, how often each prompt re-runs, and what extras cost. A monthly price alone misleads: AthenaHQ meters by response, Peec and Otterly by prompt count, Nightwatch by keywords and prompts. Convert each to answers per month and ask how many runs back each number.
